Taking Flight

Cocoon
A few weeks ago my mom gave us a jar of parsley with three caterpillars in it.  Two weeks later they turned into cocoons.

Butterfly in Jar
Two weeks after that I returned home one day to discover that the butterflies had been born and were ready to take flight.

Butterfly Released
Letting them go and watching them flutter up, up, up to the big blue sky was quite miraculous.  Reminded me a lot about "baby brother" who's been living in his cocoon for close to 9 months now.

Butterfly Ready to Fly
I wonder when he will take flight?

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.  -Nathaniel Hawthorne

I love this quote and I will use it as my reminder that now, more than ever before, is the time to slow down, to be quiet, and to be present for the transformations taking place inside and all around me.

Your Personal Reflection:  What is it in you that is ready to take flight?

  1. Shannon, you were so right with your comment on my blog yesterday.
I knew this would be a neat surprise - and it sure was.
    Thanks.
I love this post and the quote by Hawthorne.

I am taking flight into a life that's more creative, free, healthy, strong, ambitious....

What a lovely project it is to see a caterpillar turn into cocoon turn to a butterfly - my daughter would have loved to see that. We are actually planning a trip to a butterfly conservatory on the weekend. Should be great.

oohh, and I love how you compared the butterfly to a baby - so sweet ;)

I also love reading about how you're celebrating motherhood & enjoying your pregnancy - it is such a wondrous time full of hope!
Wishing you strength for birthing (but have no doubt you'll do it from your toes!) and a beautiful healthy baby boy :)
    xo!
